Many of the privately kept gardens in Helensburgh & Lomond area are outstanding and this year six of the best will be open to the public under this scheme in which garden owners donate forty per cent of the taking to the Scotland’s Garden Sceme chosen charities.
Gardens open this year are
Kilarden in Rosneath, with and important collection of rhododendrons - open from April 8 2001
Glenarn Gardens in Rhu, renowned for being one of the most important rhododendron gardens in the country also has a superb collection of magnolias and camellias - open from May 6 2001
Linn Gardens in Cove, which has had a considerable amount of renovation over the past ten years will be open from May 7 2001.
Geilston House, on the outskirts of Cardross is now owned and maintained by the National Trust for Scotland. Its walled garden is planted with shrubs, heathers and herbaceous plants while the glen has a spectacular collection of azaleas underplanted with wild hyacinths. - open from May 13 2001.
Auchendarroch on the banks of Loch Lomond, just south of Tarbetboasts a wide variety of rhododendrons, hydrangeas and azaleas
Cardross Gardens - on the Darlieth road from Cardross is in fact two gardens. Kirkton Cottage has conditions from hot and dry to wet and boggy with planting to suit while High Auchensail is mainly wooded.
Hill House in Helensburgh - open all season - makes a special effort to raise funds for the scheme in September with a plant sale in the grounds of the house.
