The countryside around Helensburgh

Helensburgh is fortunate to be surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in Scotland, and it is important that it is managed and protected effectively. Some of this vital work is carried out by voluntary organisations which include :-

Helensburgh Green Belt Group

Alastair Macbeth, Chairman

The Helensburgh Green Belt Group (HGBG) is a voluntary organisation seeking to enhance and protect the countryside around Helensburgh. Further information is available on our website at www.hgbg.org.uk

Helensburgh & District Access Forum

David Robertson, Convenor

The Access Forum is designing and implementing a high quality path network around Helensburgh and into the National Park in cooperation with land owners and the Council. It has recently produced The Helensburgh and Lomond Footpath Map showing various footpaths and route-ways in and around the town with a description of each one. It is available from Tourist Information Centres and several shops £1.50

Helensburgh Tree TrustHelensburgh Tree Conservation Trust

Sandy Kerr, Chairman

The Helensburgh Tree Conservation Trust has the objective of promoting the conservation of the treescape of Helensburgh for the public benefit and with special emphasis on the arboricultural heritage of the town. A detailed inventory of the trees is held in the Library. A draft Management Plan for them will shortly be available.

Duchess Wood LNR Committee

Sandy Kerr, Chairman

A Local Nature Reserve (LNR) is a protected area of land designated by a local authority because of its local special natural interest and/or educational value. Duchess Wood is the only designated LNR in the Helensburgh and Lomond Area.

Management of the Wood is the responsibility of Argyll and Bute Council, though it has delegated part of that responsibility to the Lower Clyde Greenspace as its agent.

The Duchess Wood LNR Committee has five subgroups as follows :

Helensburgh and District Natural History Society

Dr. John Patterson, Chairman

The Society brings together members who have interests in the flora, wildlife, birds, geology and archaeology of our local, national and world environment and also members who have more general environmental interests

The Society provides each year a series of illustrated lectures on a wide variety of environmental and geological subjects between October and March and organises excursions each month (except midsummer).
